Glossary Of Bedding Terms

  • AllerRest™ Fabric  AllerRest™ fabric is a specially woven fabric that prevents dust, dirt and harmful allergens from penetrating into bedding. AllerRest™ fabric is 100% cotton, pesticide-free allergen barrier fabric that has been lab-tested, and is proven to be an effective safeguard to dust mite transfer. The exclusive fabric is 300 thread count 100% cotton, and soft to the touch so comfort is maintained. AllerRest™ fabric assures long-term protection against daily exposure in use, maintaining high quality performance for your bedding investment.
  • Baffle Box Design  True Baffle Box design refers to internal three-dimensional fabric wall boxes that allow maximum thickness and comfort while maintaining even distribution within the boxes. This construction will minimize migration of fill so the down doesn’t shift or clump in one section of the item. Used in comforter and feather bed designs.
  • Baffle Channel  Baffle Channel refers to a construction method used for featherbeds. The channels, created by fabric walls, can be horizontal or vertical. Typically, a horizontal channel is used to provide extra support for the lumbar region of the spine. Regardless of orientation, baffle channels allow the fill to loft throughout the featherbed, conform to your body when you lie down, and to stay in place as you move from side to side. It also lets you manipulate where the fill is placed, giving you adjustable support wherever you need it most.
  • Barrier Weave Fabric  Pacific Coast’s® proprietary BarrierWeave™ fabric is a unique weave that is tightly woven and specially finished to be up to 3 times to be more leakproof, so down and feathers won’t sneak out. BarrierWeave ™ fabric is also finer, softer and more durable for lasting comfort and easy care.
  • Batiste Fabric  A smooth surfaced, fine-textured, fabric resembling silk that is extremely lightweight and similar to fine nun’s veiling. Featured exclusively on the Lunesse™ Comforter, batiste is an incredibly lightweight 370 thread count fabric that’s 30% lighter than similar thread count fabrics, allowing the down to “float” inside.
  • Box Design  Features a closed, no-shift construction that keeps the down in place so there is no fill migration.
  • Children’s Pillow  Specially designed with smaller dimensions (19” x 25”) to better fit the head of a child aged 2 to 12 and softer support for a more restful night’s sleep.
  • ComfortLock® Border  Featured on all Pacific Coast® Comforters, the Patented Comfort Lock®System no-shift design keeps the fluffy down on top for easy care. A three-sided border locks down in place over the sleeper, thereby eliminating excess down shifting to the edges or bottom.
  • Damask  Made on a jacquard loom, a damask weave alternates satin and matte textures to create a glossy pattern. The design is visible on both sides of the fabric.
  • Diamond Box Design  Same as True Baffle Box Design except with a decorative diamond shape pattern rather than of a box shape pattern. Refers to internal three-dimensional fabric wall boxes that allow maximum thickness and comfort while maintaining even distribution of fill within the boxes. This construction will minimize migration of fill so the down doesn’t shift or clump in one section of the item. Used in comforter and feather bed designs.
  • Double Stitching  Double stitching is a sign of quality and superior construction. It is much stronger than single needle stitching and prevents down from escaping. It is used around the edges of bedding and usually finished with corded trim. Pacific Coast®uses either white or navy blue corded trim.
  • Down  The soft insulating cluster found on the breast of geese and ducks. Unlike feathers which have a quill, down is a plume, and has no hard elements. There is no difference in quality between white and gray goose down.
  • Dual Inner Chambered Pillow Design  This patented design has two inner cores of either down or feathers that run the length of the pillow. These cores are surrounded by two additional layers of plush down. The construction allows your head to nestle between the two cores for a supportive cushiony cradle.
  • Duvet  A functional or decorative covering that protects your comforter from dirt, moisture and body oils. Pacific Coast® duvets are made from 100% cotton.
  • Enhanced ComfortLock®  Comfort Lock® comforter designs provide more warmth and comfort than ordinary comforters. A unique three-sided border locks down above the sleeper in the center of the comforter instead of letting the down shift uselessly to the sides and bottom. This further improves the overall loftiness of the comforter while keeping more down where the sleeper can enjoy it.
  • Extra Warmth Comforters  Extra Warmth can be achieved in two ways: either through higher fill power or through higher ounce weights. In outerwear or sleeping bags, most consumers understand that a higher fill power communicates a warmer product. However, a 550 fill power comforter with a fill weight of 36 ounces will be much warmer than a 550 fill power comforter with a fill weight of 26 ounces.
  • Featherbed  Originating in Europe, a Feather Bed is a feather-filled bedding element providing support for the entire body. A featherbed is placed on top of a mattress, either under or over a fitted sheet, to create gentle support. It is made of feathers, encased within a feather-proof fabric shell, and possibly a down top. Construction will be either Baffle Box or Horizontal Baffle Channel or Vertical Baffle Channel.
  • Feathers  The actual feathers on geese and ducks—as opposed to the soft cluster of down found on the breast—are durable and springy, making them an essential support element in featherbeds and medium and firm pillows.
  • Fill Power  Fill power is a term used to describe the quality of down. Fill Power is the amount of cubic inches that 1 ounce of Down will fill. The higher the fill power, the larger and stronger the clusters of down, and the better the down will loft, trap air and insulate. Large clusters provide superior insulation, breathe better and last much longer than smaller, fragile down clusters used in many lower quality or imported comforters.
  • Gray Duck Down  There is no difference in quality between duck or goose down. The color of the bird has no impact on its quality. Fill Power and cleanliness are the best quality indicators.
  • Gray Goose Down  There is no difference in quality between white and gray goose down.
  • Jacquard  Any fabric woven on a jacquard loom, which creates intricate and complex design directly into the fabric. Damasks, brocades and tapestries are all created this manner.
  • Hand  A term that describes how a fabric feels when you touch it.
  • Hemstitching  A small decorative stitch, traditionally used along a border or hem.
  • Hyperclean®  Only Pacific Coast® down and feathers are Hyperclean®. The unique cleaning method washes and rinses the down and feathers up to eight times, removing the dust, dirt and allergens that cause allergic reactions. This leaves only clean, fluffy, supremely comfortable down and feathers.
  • Loft  Describes the thickness and fluffiness of down. Higher loft = increased fluffiness.
  • 90% Cluster  Supremely fluffy down clusters providing exceptional quality and re-loftability. More down clusters mean more fluffiness and more insulating warmth. A Down Cluster is the group of components: down (cluster), nestling down (a very immature feather or down that comes together at tiny quill point), and plumule (soft, fine feathers where the central shaft is as fine as the filaments that come off of it).
  • Pillow in a Pillow Design  This design is constructed with an inner pillow of feathers for full support across the entire pillow. It is then surrounded by down for maximum comfort. It is literally a pillow resting inside another pillow.
  • Pillow Inserts  Pillow Inserts are down filled pillow inserts that can be placed in a decorative cover. Typically, these are used in living spaces or used as accent for your bed. They come in multiple sizes to mix and match using decorative covers purchased through other retailers.
  • Protectors  Machine washable covers made of 100% cotton for pillows, comforters, and feather beds. Keep your bedding clean and protect your investment.
  • Sewn Through Box Design  Same as Box Design. The sewn-through box design features a closed, no-shift construction keeping the down in place for an easy care solution.
  • Sham  A decorative covering for pillows that also protects your pillow.
  • Side by Side Pillow Design   An inner pillow with a central baffle forms side-by-side chambers that provide full support that won’t shift away as you move throughout the night.
  • Single Inner Chamber Pillow Design  Single chamber design features a firmer internal core of down for head support, surrounded by more fluffy down for maximum comfort.
  • Thread Count  Thread count is the number of threads that are contained in one square inch of fabric. Higher thread count fabrics are woven with finer yarns.
  • Tick  The cover or shell of a comforter, pillow or featherbed. Pacific Coast® ticks are made of the highest quality cotton, tightly woven to prevent any down and feathers from escaping. Pacific Coast® ticks are only made from 100% cotton with a thread count of 230 or higher.
  • Traditional Pillow Design  The traditional pillow design provides a high sink experience that conforms to your head and adjusts to your changing sleep positions.
  • True Baffle Box Design  True Baffle Box design refers to internal three-dimensional fabric wall boxes that allow maximum thickness and comfort while maintaining even distribution within the boxes. This construction will minimize migration of fill so the down doesn’t shift or clump in one section of the item. Used in comforter and feather bed designs.
  • Tufted Corner Design  The tufted corner design features pleated corners and extra fabric creating the ultimate, super fluffy, no-shift comforter for easy care and lasting comfort.
  • Vertical Baffle Channel  Baffle Channel refers to a construction method used for featherbeds.
  • White Duck Down  There is no difference in quality between duck or goose down. The color of the bird has no impact on its quality. What is important is Fill Power and cleanliness.
  • White Goose Down  There is no difference in quality between white and gray goose down.
